Google is eyeing a major expansion in Fulton Market, looking to nearly double the amount of office space it leases in the trendy West Loop neighborhood.

Only months after signing a lease for 132,000 square feet in a new Sterling Bay building, the tech giant is on the hunt for even more space, sources told Crain’s.

Google helped fuel the development frenzy in Fulton Market four years ago when it opened its Midwest headquarters in 372,000 square feet at the Sterling Bay-developed building at 1000 West Fulton Street.

Last October, the tech giant announced it would take another 132,000 square feet nearby in Sterling Bay’s 210 North Carpenter Street.

But sources told Crain’s the firm is running out of room in those two buildings, and could be looking to build its total footprint in the area to some 1 million square feet.

Among the locations Google is eyeing are Sterling Bay’s planned office buildings across the street from the Google HQ building at 1000 West Carroll Street and 345 North Morgan Street, according to Crain’s. Also on the list: the office development planned at 320 North Sangamon Street by Tishman Speyer and Chicago developer Mark Goodman, and the complex Shapack Partners and Focus Development are building at 167 North Green Street, according to the report. [Crain’s] — John O’Brien
