City seeks Fresh Kills solar, wind proposals

The city has issued a request for proposals to design, construct, install and operate solar and wind power facilities at Fresh Kills on Staten Island, according to a statement received today.

Approximately 75 acres of land are available to be developed into large-scale renewable energy facilities. When completed, the project could more than double the city’s current renewable energy capacity, the statement said.

The city’s Department of Environmental Protection and Economic Development Corporation are offering the land for lease, and no terms were disclosed.

Fresh Kills spans 2,200 acres on the western shore of Staten Island and served as the city’s principal solid waste landfill until 2001. As part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC environmental initiative, the capped landfill sites in Fresh Kills will be used to house solar and wind power installations developed by a yet-to-be-chosen company.
