Related California and the Weingart Center Association plan to develop a 17-story highrise for homeless residents in Downtown Los Angeles.
The Irvine-based developer and L.A.-based nonprofit recently closed escrow on a deal to acquire a 1.1-acre parking lot from the city at 600 San Pedro Street, according to Urbanize Los Angeles reported. Plans call for 302 residential units in what would be the largest supporting housing complex in Los Angeles.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The approved highrise is one of three projects involving the Weingart Center Association, which plans to bring a total of 700 units of supportive housing to the streets near its Downtown headquarters,
The first is a 19-story tower with 278 affordable apartments for homeless residents at 555 South Crocker Street. The project, dubbed Weingart Center Tower 1A, topped off construction last month. The $160-million project is slated to open early next year.
The second project is the tower proposed for 600 San Pedro. It will contain four managers’ apartments and 298 units of permanent supportive housing for extremely low-, very low-, and low-income households. Its ground floor will have 2,800 square feet of shops and restaurants.
It will include a four-story parking garage for 212 cars to serve the Weingart Center across the street. Atop the garage will be a community courtyard, amphitheater and garden.
Residents will get onsite case management and substance-abuse services, mental and physical health care, job training and education courses.

Weingart Center’s latest affordable complex snags bond funding
The project, dubbed 600 San Pedro, was designed by San Diego-based Joseph Wong Design Associates, which handled its approvals, and has now shifted to Large Architecture of Pico-Robertson. The rectangular apartment building will include inset terraces on the 6th, 12th and 14th floors, according to a rendering.
The homeless housing tower received $30 million in funding from the city, and part of a $57 million grant from the county. It’s expected to be completed in June 2025.
The third Weingart project, dubbed Weingart Tower 2, will be a 12-story building with 104 apartments for homeless residents and a manager at 554-562 South San Pedro Street, on the same intersection.
Weingart and Related are working on the seven-story Alveare apartments, a proposed 335-unit affordable housing complex at 1405 South Broadway. A 52-unit project for homeless residents is in the works at 7024 South Broadway in South L.A.
