Surge Energy inches closer to Houston’s Energy Corridor

Houston’s Energy Corridor has a new neighbor.

This week, Surge Energy announced it would be moving its headquarters from its current home at Heron Lakes Office Park near Sam Houston Race Park over to Westway Plaza, the Houston Business Journal reports.

Westway Plaza is about 5 miles from the concentration of energy company headquarters off Route 10 between S Texas 6 and Sam Houston Tollway known as the Energy Corridor.

Surge Energy — not to be confused with the caffeinated soft drink produced by Coca-Cola in the 1990s — is an oil and natural gas company that drills exclusively in the Texas Permian Basin. Of the company’s to nearly 200 employees, more than 100 are based in Houston.

Since its founding, the company has always been headquartered in the country’s oil and gas capital. The new digs at 11330 Clay Road are just 8 miles down the road from the old offices. The move represents a 25,000-square-foot physical expansion for the company. Surge says it plans to move into its shiny new 64,000 square feet of office space in February.

Surge was launched in 2015 as a subsidiary of China-based Shandong Xinchao Energy. The Chinese energy company, which is publicly traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, launched its Texas operations “with a strategy to build a sustainable U.S. oil and gas company,” according to a cached version of Surge Energy’s website. The Houston-based energy company owns 114,000 net acres in the Midland Basin of West Texas, one of three primary sub-basins of the Permian Basin.
